The outfit is painted the correct Forest Green, and it is absolutely beautiful. The Harley-Davidson Model J was introduced in 1915 as the companyâs first motorcycle with a proper gearbox, a 3-speed that would stay in use until 1936. It was the companyâs first bike with a kickstarter, too, which eliminated the need for bicycle pedals to start the machine; finally, Harley-Davidson had entered the modern era. The Model J was the top-of-the-range machine with full electrical equipment, and it soon proved a reliable companion. The J models were regularly updated with engine and chassis improvements, including stronger forks, better oiling, stronger valve gear, better oil retention and an increasingly streamlined look over time. By 1928, the J series finally gained a front brake, which means the roads in America were improving and not 100 percent dirt as before, when a strong front brake was an actual hazard. Over its 15-year production run, the Model J defined Harley-Davidson, and the last of the line, the JD, was a solid favorite for its utter reliability, which can bee seen at vintage events like the Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run, where JDs swamped the finisherâs category in the 2012 and 2014 events. This beautiful 1928 Harley-Davidson JD with its sidecar is a unique machine, and itâs unlikely youâll find another Harley-Davidson with its original sidecar.
