1939 Harley-Davidson EL w/ Sidecar

Used 1939 1,000 miles
Phoenix Lake-Cedar Ridge, CA

This 1939 Harley-Davidson EL is powered by a 61ci Knucklehead V-twin paired with a three-speed transmission and equipped with a matching sidecar featuring black upholstery and a spare tire carrier. The combination is finished in green and orange, and additional equipment includes a springer front end, drum brakes, a reverse gear, a fishtail muffler, and a sprung seat. The bike and sidecar are said to have been acquired in 1970 by their previous owner, who completed a refurbishment with paintwork and a frame replacement before selling it in 1986. The combination was then repurchased 10 years later, after which it was reportedly stored in an Indianapolis garage until coming to the selling dealer in 2019. Subsequent work consisted of cleaning the fuel tank, resealing the engine, and a carburetor service. This Knucklehead sidecar rig is offered with a clean Ohio title. The two-piece fuel tank and fenders are said to have been refinished in their current olive green and orange in the 1970s, at which time the frame was also replaced. New chrome fender trim was fitted by the selling dealer, who also polished the camshaft cover and other existing brightwork. Equipment includes a sprung saddle, spot lamps, a wrap-around horseshoe oil tank, a hinged rear fender, a tool box, a rear stand, and a fishtail muffler. A springer fork with a damping adjuster and a seat spring comprise the motorcycle’s only suspension. Braking is from drums at both ends, with the front operated by a lever on the left. The selling dealer had the bearings repacked in the wheel hubs, which are finished in black along with the rims. The walk-around video above shows both the motorcycle and color-matched sidecar, which can be removed for solo riding and features a single black seat, chrome trim, and a deck-mounted spare tire as well as a removable windshield and tonneau cover. Shifting is performed via a foot-operated clutch and a hand lever on the left side of the fuel tank. The chrome “cat’s eye” dash contains indicator lights, an ignition switch, a 120-mph speedometer, and a five-digit odometer showing 1k miles, a handful of which have been ridden by the selling dealer. Total mileage is unknown. The air-cooled 61ci Knucklehead V-twin was so named due to the four chrome bolts on its rocker covers resembling knuckles on closed fists, and featured hemispherical cylinder heads with overhead valves to achieve a factory rating of 40 horsepower. This example was serviced by the selling dealer with new seals, including replacement clutch and side cover gaskets, as well as cleaning the fuel tank and tending to the carburetor. A running video can be viewed above. Power is transferred to the rear wheel through a three-speed non-sequential transmission with reverse. The selling dealer notes matching belly numbers on the engine cases, photos of which can be viewed in the gallery below, and that the bike leaks oil when sitting.
