1959 Flathead VL - Rikuo VLE ~ Harley-Davidson design manufactured

Price:
$3,800
Summary:
Used 1959
Location:
Signal Hill, CA
Description:

In the early 1930s Rikuo run under the license and name of Harley-Davidson, utilizing their tooling, and later on under the name Rikuo till 1958. The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan rates the 1935 Rikuo Motorcycle as one of their 240 Landmarks of Japanese Automotive Technology. The word "Rikuo" itself is pronounced "rik ew Oh" stated really rapidly with an emphasis on the "Oh," near as I can tell. The name is relatively common in the Japanese language, occasionally referencing characters, however in this case it equates as "Land King" or "Continental King" -. The bottom end is totally solid. It leakages some oil, if you can imagine that. Lubrication system on this motorbike is "Total loss" suggesting additional oil is supplied from the remote tank in the left side of the fatbob to the engine as it is burned. The engine does not smoke nor make use of extreme oil. The engine cranks readily when done by an experienced operator, idles well, runs fantastic, pulls hard, moves perfectly, and clutch does not slip. The top end restore utilized 80 cubic inch (1311cc) HD pistons, which were exactly what were installed in the motorbike. There are references to 80 cu in versions in some places. The HD V & & VL engines were 74ci/1200cc & & 80ci/1311cc. Sidecar lugs belong to the frame. I have a copy of the Japanese parts list for both the big and little flathead Rikuo twins, and many of the engine and trans mission part numbers are the same as HD V/VL and R (45ci) engines! Undoubtedly, the parts list copy chooses this bike. The transmission is a three speed forward/one reverse device. Keep in mind that moving is by foot clutch/hand shift lever. The primary gear has actually been changed out to a considerably bigger one, causing the motorcycle to be far more useable on contemporary roads (RPM lowered). Retreating from a stop needs a little finesse; no issue for a knowledgeable operator. Mechanically otherwise, the motorbike runs straight down the road, no unfortunate noises. The speedometer is unusable; issue seems the rear axle drive gear. The tires are old, but new ones had the sale. The headlight and tail light, and horn, work. The tin seems all initial. Rikuo took lots of styling hints from various versions of Harleys for many years, the tin on this one seeming just like early 1950s HDs, excepting the retention of the springer fork. The Japanese characters on the rear fender mean "Military Bar," suggesting that a sidecar was when connected to this unit and made use of for fetching soldiers back to their barracks after drinking expeditions. The Japanese characters on the pedestrian slicer on the front fender means "Old Farts Club".
