This bike was developed in Germany - Born 10-14-1963 and delivered 10-15-1963 to Butler and Smith BMW dealership in NYC. The restoration is common of the Vintage Master technicians, a Pennsylvania dad and child who possessed one of the first BMW dealerships in the US. We have actually had this bike for over 12 years, constantly in an airconditioned garage. The bike is in excellent condition. The R27's 250 cc OHV vertical single was the only rubber-mounted thumper engine BMW ever produced, and was their last shaft drive single-cylinder motorcycle. The engine drained 18 hp (13 kW), the greatest ever for a shaft-drive BMW single. MW did things in a different way from other manufacturers. This appears in the R27. Its enclosed shaft final drive is unusual for a single cylinder motorbike. But it likewise had a triangulated Earles front fork (called after English designer Ernest Earles); so the bike had a front swingarm in addition to a rear swingarm. The engines crankshaft was set out fore-to-aft, not side- to-side; likewise an unusual feature. This means, the crank and the final shaft were in line, and drive forces did not need to be run with a set of 90-degree gears. Likewise, the kick starter swung out sideways instead of parallel to the frame. Certainly an important collectors bike and a real classic. Uncommon also.
