1964 Husqvarna 400 Cross

Summary:
Used 1964
Location:
Santa Cruz, CA
Description:

This bike is not a 1964, it's a 1970!! But the listing template did not offer, had to put something. Same with the VIN. This does not have a 17 digit VIN. Just MH4585. And of course there is no odometer. Miles are not applicable. This motorcycle has NOS Borrani rims. They had never been drilled for spokes! I had to have them drilled for the new stainless steel spokes from Buchanan. Once drilled, I had them polished by Mirror Image in Salinas, California. Mike Compton is very very good as a polisher. He has a loyal clientele, including me. You’re gonna wait over half a year, but he’s worth it.The Borranis were drilled for a Maico 501. I decided to use them on this Husky instead. The front rim has identical spoke angles to a husky, so it laced right up!Husqvarna rear wheels have a unique spoke pattern , so the lacer utilized a custom spoke pattern to match the maico pattern to the husky drum. Came out perfect! In fact, when on the trueing stand, there is no side to side wobble seen on used rims. This engine has brand new Surflex clutch plates. Surflex is the OEM maker. The clutch cover is NOS. Very rare! Many used clutch covers have damaged kick start stops due to kick back. All new bearings, seals, gaskets, and engine paint. I had sent John L. all the new bearings and seals that I had gathered. John refused to use most of them. Not up to his high standards. He returned them along with the complete engine. So yeah, I paid extra, but I know this engine has the best stuff! The connecting rod is a new VINTCO con rod, along with the crank pin, crank pin needle bearing, piston wrist pin, and wrist pin needle bearing. New Magura grips, levers, and perches. New cables. Polished handle bar clamps and a new chrome handle bar.Lots of new zinc plating. Some powder coated items. ( three, I believe)Frame, swing arm, fork lowers are silver paint. Just didn’t have the money for more powder coating. New Metzeler MX tires. New seat from Vintage Husky. The new 520 non O-ring motorcycle chain is RENOLD. They are the OEM supplier.NOS rear inner fender with correct disclaimer decal.Used but very straight front and rear fenders. Would polish up terrific.Kick stand is fully functional. There had been a bend on the solid steel shaft that inserts into the frame housing. I straightened out most of it, but not all of it. I'll show the new owner what it looks like. The three powder coated items all have some "battle scars" from a 50 plus year old MX bike. I included a pic of the air cleaner cover. The frame serial number stamp on the right side of the steering neck is hard to see. It's been sanded off so much I guess. But it's there. MH 4585.The rear brake foot pedal had been re-inforced at some point long ago. Probable fell over way back when? I cleaned it up quite a bit. The frame is straight and rust free. No repairs, dents, cracks. Same for the rear swing-arm.Had to replace one bent fork tube. Now there are two straight fork tubes.Triple trees are excellent. This will be sold on a bill of sale. No title for an off road bike. At least not this one.The movie "On Any Sunday" came out in summer of 1971. Sales instantly took off for Husqvarna. But the year of 1970 was when this bike was made. One web-site husky registry claims there were only 700 400 Cross motorcycles made in 1970. Go ahead and google it. That makes these very rare and scarce. Some sellers say the Steve McQueen husky sold for mega bucks. That's true. anything owned by Steve McQueen would sell for mega bucks. Steve McQueens dirty socks would sell for mega bucks. This 400 cross was not in the movie. It was not owned by Steve McQueen. I'm not asking for Steve McQueen mega money. In fact I've never seen a husky with a Mike Carter gas tank AND a Vintage Husky engine for under 20,000 dollars. It's getting much more difficult to find a gas tank restoration shop that does it all the way correct. John LeFevre at Vintage Husky will no longer restore gas tanks. "Takes too long" was what he said to me. Mike Carter says he hates restoring tanks and only wants to work on his own projects. most of the pictures in this listing are very close-up to the motorcycle, in order to show you exactly how it looks from multiple angles. No twenty foot away pictures in dim light. This motorcycle is listed for sale locally as well. I reserve the right to cancel this auction anytime.
