Benelli Tornado 650Watch this specific bike in action on video: https://youtu.be/cebzyL5z9M0 https://youtu.be/UIVxtz92BfAVintage Italian twin starts and rides just beautifully. Engine mechanically sound and starts easily if you know how; pulls like a train with no issues. Campaigned in the 2016 Moto Melee, a three-day, ~850 miles back-roads adventure ride for vintage motorcycles with a START/FINISH in San Francisco. New battery fitted. Standard exhaust, very nice all original 70’s bodywork and paint, looks in keeping with age, fine patina. Around 1,500 of these bikes made it to the United States, so you won't be riding the same Triumph Bonneville as everyone else at the café.Steve McQueen Design InfluenceThe Tornado was strongly influenced by British motorcycles of the time. During the design phase, Steve McQueen, the U.S. celebrity spokesperson for Benelli, suggested a Métisse-type chassis to improve handling. Luigi Benelli, who had never designed a frame for a motorcycle this massive or powerful before, used this idea. Front suspension utilizes Marzocchi forks, and rear suspension is a swing arm with twin Ceriani shock absorbers. Brakes are drums from Grimeca.Radical Engine DesignPiero Prampolini designed the engine; his racing background prompted him to design an engine that was as oil-tight as possible. The engine uses horizontally split crankcases; o-rings on mating surfaces and external oil-lines are kept to a minimum. Also carried over from racing are the radically different bore and stroke, which allow relatively large valves. The shorter stroke allows the rods to be shortened and reduce the engine's overall height and weight. To reduce piston slap, the cylinders are offset rearwards from the crankshaft. A wide squish band is employed between pistons and head to improve combustion at low revs. Piston to cylinder friction is normally greatest at the rear of the cylinder. Prampolini reversed the rotation of the engine so this source of heat was brought to the front of the engine where it would be better cooled by the airflow around the engine. Prampolini's compact design could be claimed as the most modern expression of British twin-cylinder technology, but made in Italy.ModsCharging system: Replacement for breaker points and advance unit—Elektronik Sachse Digital Ignition ZDG 3.23Single battery replaces double battery setupStock parts replacing originals Gas tankHeadlightMufflerSpeedometer (so odometer reading is not accurate–unknown)1 of the intake valves, valve guideRepair fin on engineSpecsAssembly: Pesaro, ItalyEngine: 643 cc (39.2 cu in) 4 stroke, ohv parallel twinBore / stroke: 84 mm × 58 mm (3.3 in × 2.3 in)Compression ratio: 9:1/9.6:1Top speed: 111 mph (179 km/h)Power: 52–58 bhp (39–43 kW) @ 7,400 rpmTransmission: Wet clutch, 5 speed, chain driveFrame type: Duplex cradleSuspension: Front–telescopic forks, Rear–swinging arm Brakes: Drum 230 mm (9.1 in) twin sided front, 200 mm (7.9 in) rearTyres: 350x18 front, 400x18 rearWheelbase: 1,380 mm (54 in)Seat height: 810 mm (32 in)Weight: 460 lb (210 kg) (dry)Fuel capacity: 17 L (4.5 US gal)Starting: Kick only!Cooling System: Air cooled
