1974 Kawasaki Z1A

Summary:
Used 1974
Location:
Asheville, NC
Description:

1974 Z1A Z1F-46172 build 6/74I have a clean and clear NC title in my name. I also have title history back to a 1989 Texas title along with the NC DMV search for any issues in its life, there are none. I don’t know the true mileage. This bike was acquired last year as a project. It is one of the most complete bikes I have ever owned. The original pieces and the condition at the time of purchase have made this an interesting cosmetic rebuild. The carburetors, switches and gages were sent to Clay Stockdall for rebuild and restoration. The mileage that was on the bike when I bought is the same as it was restored to. I put the restored carbs, new oil & filter and a battery in it and the bike started and ran.I decided based on the motor running to do a mostly cosmetic restoration where possible and would try to use the original parts cleaned up to a good level or would restore, where that level was not acceptable to me. The date codes and numbers for this bike are on one slide in the pictures. On the engine I removed the original covers and cleaned and polished to an OE level. While in there I replaced the seals and any gaskets I disturbed. I had the frame hardware re-plated where it is unique and used some stainless steel for the common nuts and bolts. The engine cover hardware is stainless with small heads to look original. The original rims, brake lever, rear foot pegs, shock springs were all re-chromed.The wire harness and most of the electrical system was in very good and supple shape so I cleaned and used it. The rear shocks are the original with the springs re-chromed and new reflectors. There is some minor pitting on the shock bodies, but they are very presentable. I had the frame and swing arm powder coated, I like the quality the people I use produce, I think the frame is better for it. The locks are original to the bike, but I had a set of keys made, haven’t found any Lions-head style yet. I cleaned and polished the rear hub and cleaned the front hub (it had the assembly date rubber stamped on it) and rotor. I used NOS spokes and nipples with the re-chromed original date coded rims. The seat came with the bike and is in good shape, I think it’s a reproduction. The exhaust came with the bike. The chrome polished up good for original parts but #1 and #3 had small rust spots that are visible, I made covers out of polished stainless to dress up and make functional. #3 has the lower area rusted out so I again made covers of polished stainless to cover. I was able to find an NOS #2 pipe, so it is perfect. I looked for NOS to replace the other 2 but have not found any yet. If the patches bother you a set of reproductions will cure that but won't have the numbers on them. The tool kit is in nice shape with the original bag and where the tools weren’t nice, I had them re-plated. The owner's manual is a reproduction. The chain oil pump is there but I have the drive shaft removed, the chain oil tank is a reproduction. The new chain is a “O” ring one and am not using the oiling system.I primarily use Z1 Parts for any new replacement parts (they do a great job) including the Japan made paint set, fenders, cables, handlebars, grips, hoses, frame decals, fork tubes, headlight chrome and rebuild kits for the caliper, forks and master cylinder. It has new Dunlop Goldseal tires that were mounted and balanced by my local Kawasaki dealer. The points and regulator and rectifier are electronic, I find them to be more reliable. The rear brake actuator hardware is stainless steel. I’m sure there are many other things I have done that have made this a better original cosmetically rebuilt bike. I think a cam adjustment and an oil change are needed soon. I will assist your chosen carrier for pick-up.
