This YZ80 was purchased from the original owner in early 2023. He was only 14 years old when he brought the brand-new YZ home in trunk of the family Buick 225 sedan. The bike was was ridden in local woods for a number of years and then languished in a barn. Fast forward a few decades and the YZ got a full engine rebuild with new Yamaha crank, bearings, and seals. The cylinder was re-bored to the first oversize and fitted with a Wiseco piston. The clutch plates were replaced as well. This work was intended to interest a new generation in riding, the kids however weren't interested. What a shame.Back into hibernation it went until being purchased in early 2023. It was very crusty. But the engine and transmission were in top shape. It took only a few hours to make it run, but everything else was awful. The YZ 80 was stripped to the bare frame and then the frame, swingarm, and other parts were powdercoated by a top-tier powdercoating shop. Modern tapered roller bearings were fitted to the headstock and new OEM swingarm bushings were pressed into place. Dozens and dozens of OEM and NOS parts were sourced from as far away as New Zealand. Nearly every fastener was replaced. The forks were completely rebuilt. The carburetor was overhauled. The exhaust system was blasted and painted with 3 coats of VHT exhaust primer and 3 coats of VHT paint. A new OEM spark arrester was installed. Nearly every gasket was replaced. The wheels were carefully disassembled and rebuilt with new bearings, seals, spokes, nipples, rim strips, tubes, and tires. Even the oil tank received a bunch of expensive OEM/NOS parts. The oil tank cap, cap gasket, oil feed line, vent line, and retention band are all new genuine Yamaha parts. Sprockets and lock washers are new OEM Yamaha. Chain is a new RK Takasago. Many more parts not mentioned here have been replaced. The engine and frame numbers are correct for the 1975 model year and they do match. This YZ is the last year with auto-lube oil injection. To my knowledge only 1974 and 1975 were oil-injected. Thousands of dollars have been spent on this restoration and more than 100 hours of skilled labor invested as well. I could wallpaper my garage with the OEM parts wrappers. All work was completed by a retired technician with over 40 years on the job.Sale is with a bill of sale and for off-road use only. The motorcycle Includes the actual service manual delivered with the Yahama on day one. The hand written margin notes by the original owner are an interesting bit of history. Hagerty’s Valuation Tool shows this excellent condition 1975 YZ80 at $7,300 and rapidly rising in value. It has appreciated over 58% in the past year and is trending upward.
