By rights, this is a motorcycle that never should have been built. It's more of a concept bike for the show circuit, but Honda decided to break the rules and put the Rune into production. It is an outrageous machine, almost seven feet long from its front tire to the tip of its tail-dragger rear fender, 800-plus pounds, powered by the 1800cc flat-Six used in the Gold Wing luxo-tourer, list price when new $26,000.More than anything the Rune was a statement, rolling proof that cruisers could do more than follow the V-Twin blueprint laid down by a certain motorcycle company based in Milwaukee. Said the American Honda executive who green-lighted the project, "We wanted to establish new directions that no other manufacturer had ever attempted. We wanted to set the bar higher than ever, erecting standards that no one else had yet imagined, while also exploding old limitations on what an original equipment manufacturer could mass produce."Mission accomplished, and how! Amazingly, the Rune lost very little in the translation from showbike to limited-edition streetbike. This all-stock example in Illusion Blue shows just 1,658 miles, and has lost none of its crowd-generating powers in the intervening years. This is not a motorcycle for those who like to travel incognito. Given the current economic situation in the motorcycle market, it's highly doubtful we will ever see another bike-maker take this approach to building a flagship model. The Rune remains that rare thing, a modern motorcycle that's a bonafide collectible.
