Final drive was via chain.The Sportster was the direct descendant of the Harley-Davidson "K Model" flat tracker motorcycles that won so many races in the 750 cc side valve configuration. With that racing heritage, there is no wonder that any modern H-D speed record has always been set with a Sportster model. Evel Knievel, a man with very big cojones, also made his death-defying leaps riding a Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle.The Sportster has always been the "kid brother" of the Harley-Davidson family whose "Big Twin" has always been the favored son. The Big Twins were larger displacement and had a separate engine and transmission.Now the Sportster is available in 1200 cc (74 cubic inches) with sequential port fuel injection and a five speed tranny. The little brother has finally grown up. The 2007 Sportster lineup consists of 9 separate configurationsThe 1200 cc Sportster Evolution Engine has been around for a while but 2007 introduces Electronic Sequenced Port Fuel injection which ups the throttle response and allows easy cold starting and no warm up take offs thanks to the computer that enriches the fuel air mixture automatically when the engine is cold. The engine is rubber mounted for comfort and black powder coated cases with chrome all over the visible parts of the engine. The transmission is five-speed and final drive is via Gates Aramid belt.The appearance factors are just right on this model with chrome headlight and chromed spoke wheels and new tires. The paint is denim flat black on tank and fenders with body parts in black with lots of chrome accents. There are special Marine Corps logos on the derby and timer covers. Dual hydraulic brakes bring the Sportster to a halt and chrome mirrors allow you to check out the rear view, if you need to. A black faced tachometer and speedometer make up the instrument panel.The old traditional Sportster has often been noted to have a riding position akin to straddling a rail fence, due to its high seat. This bike rides better than the old Sportster with its lowered 11? rear shocks and two up Mustang seat with back rest and chrome sissy bar for additional luggage capacity. A chrome grab bar runs along each side of the rear fender for said passenger to hang on.The bike is simplicity itself in its ease of riding. Start it by turning on the ignition switch, make sure the run switch is set to "run" and hit the starter button. The engine should erupt eagerly to life with the Electronic Fuel Injection.I rode this bike and it is indeed ready to ride as soon as it fires up, which will surprise you if you are used to the old carburetor and choke routine. The mini apes take some getting used to but actually offer the larger rider a more comfortable riding position.The estimated 55 BHP of the Sportster are not going to impress any statisticians but they, combined with the 79 foot pounds of famous Harley torque, provide a lot of power to the rear wheel and the bike has no problem getting up to speed. The five speed gearbox clunks, as they all do but the shifts are smooth and positive. Fifth gear is a tall gear best used at 50 MPH or above, otherwise the engine lugs.The lowered seat gives a more stable riding position and the bike handles well at low speed during parking lot maneuvers. The rubber engine mounts cut down on low speed vibration compared to older Sportsters. The disk brakes on both ends do a decent job of bringing the Sportster to a halt. I was reluctant to give it back when I was through.The bike has its own throaty sound that mimics that of the Big Twin and it has enough get up and go to leave the big boy behind, so if you are riding a Sportster, you know you can keep up and even lead the pack.If you can't get a Big Twin, this is the next best thing.
